Through a lot of case studies and examples, Beverly Behan emphasizes the true role a “Boardroom Star” has to play in the life of an organization that affects everything from a company’s profits to employees to reputation. She really inspires a higher level of service -- who wants to be a “Dog” after reading this book?? With all the practical tips, I feel I’ll be turning to this book many times as I wade through different boardroom situations. What a great book and definitely one to keep handy on a nearby shelf. - 5.0 out of 5 stars from Adis Vila -- Prove them Right! : Author and corporate governance expert Beverly A. Behan has hit the ball out of the ballpark in her new book out today entitled, "Becoming a Boardroom Star." The book is practical and her advice is wise. I have many takeaways form the book but the most important is "Prove them right." The last 14 months have seen greater efforts to recruit women and people of color to corporate boards giving many minorities the feeling that they are being recruited only because of their gender, race or ethnicity. Ms Behan warns that even if that were true, join the board, do a fabulous job and prove them right--that is--that you are a great director and that you make significant contributions to the board discussions. As Ms Behan points out as early as the first chapter and throughout the book, a great director makes a difference in deliberations and in the firm's performance. I urge experienced directors looking to lead boards and chair committees, less experienced directors looking to become star directors and those on the journeys to becoming corporate directors to read the book and take copious notes. I found the sections on director performance management and Appendix B on individual director feedback particularly well done. Few who write on corporate governance have done as thorough a job on this very important topic --who wants to tell a colleague who is not performing to ship out! Ms Behan clearly explains how tools including director expectations, director evaluations, director succession planning tool, and the new director feedback discussed above can guide directors through this thorny issue. Take copious notes when you read the book the first time as it is a governance book that will occupy a privileged location on your bookshelf and to which you will return many times.
